Pall’s Point-Of-Use Faucet and Shower Filters Now Available to U.S. and Canadian Consumers
Advanced Point-of-Use Filters Offer Immunocompromised Consumers Protection Against Waterborne Pathogens
PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y., June 04, 2012 -
Pall Corporation’s (NYSE: PLL)
Kleenpak™
disposable water filters are now available to U.S. and Canadian
consumers. Based on Pall technology widely used in clinical institutions
as a barrier for water-associated pathogens, Pall’s advanced
point-of-use filters can now be easily fitted to household faucets
(faucet
filters) or shower
fixtures (shower
filters). The Pall Kleenpak point-of-use filters utilize a
0.2 micron pleated filter membrane validated to retain bacteria, fungi
and protozoa. The new filters are being introduced this week at the APIC
2012 Annual Educational Conference & International Meeting (booth
#202), June 4 – 6, San
Antonio, Texas.
Tap water is a potential reservoir of risk that may contain human
pathogenic bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Legionella
pneumophila, Nontuberculosis Mycobacteria (NTM), fungi and protozoa.
Consequently, household water systems may be a source of infection,
particularly for immunocompromised consumers such as the elderly,
burn victims, people with HIV/AIDS, or chronic ailments such as asthma
and diabetes, or genetic conditions such as cystic fibrosis. Others at
risk include those taking immunosuppressive therapies, such as cancer
treatments and treatments associated with organ and stem cell
transplants.
"Continually rising healthcare costs translate to shortened hospital
stays. Immunocompromised individuals who leave the hospital environment
may need protection against opportunistic waterborne pathogens at home,”
says Dan Mueller, Vice President, Pall Medical. “Pall Kleenpak
point-of-use water filters are an ideal solution for these at-risk
individuals. For consumers looking for a safer water alternative, the
filters may help reduce cost and waste associated with bottled water."
Water filtration, directly at the point-of-use, can establish an
efficient barrier against transmission of waterborne pathogens from
water sources to consumers. Unlike typical household filter devices that
only address taste and odor, Pall Kleenpak point-of-use faucet and
shower filters retain pathogens such as bacteria, fungi and protozoa.
“There are multiple measures used to prevent infections from waterborne
pathogens in hospitals. However, the threat of infection from water
exists when individuals return home. Now Pall’s 0.2 micron faucet and
shower filters can extend protection to anyone with a weakened immune
system whether in the hospital or at home,” says Janet Stout, (www.specialpathogenslab.com)
who is an internationally recognized clinical and environmental
microbiologist and authority on Legionella – the bacteria that
causes Legionnaires’ disease.
The simple act of taking a shower may expose vulnerable individuals to
potentially dangerous pathogens that live in water systems. When water
flows through a showerhead, tiny water droplets containing contaminants
separate from the main water stream and are spread by air currents in
all directions. Some are inhaled as aerosols, while others condense onto
surfaces where contamination can be transferred through touch.
Inhalation or aspiration of pathogenic waterborne microorganisms by
immunocompromised individuals can lead to debilitating and costly
infections. Pall
Kleenpak point-of-use water filters prevent these contaminants from
entering the environment directly at the point of use.
The easy-to-install, disposable Pall Kleenpak point-of-use filters help
remove pathogens for up to 31 days and may be safely disposed of in
household refuse.
