PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y., June 02, 2011 - The Cortland, NY plant of Pall Corporation (NYSE:PLL), a global leader in filtration, separation and purification, achieved a historic milestone by completing and shipping its 500thPall Aria™ municipal water system. The Company is a leading supplier of standardized membrane water treatment systems to municipalities and industry.

The system shipped was a Pall Aria AP-2 unit, one of a series of packaged membrane systems pioneered by Pall engineers to meet the water treatment requirements of small communities. The Cortland plant’s history in municipal water goes back to 1998, when the first system was sold to the city of Chandler, Arizona, for waste water treatment. Pall devised the system to help the city meet new regulatory guidelines for public health and safety from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In 2004, Pall supplied a 400,000 gallon per day AP-4 unit to Groton, a village only 10 miles from Cortland. Since then, municipal water system sales have become one of the fastest growing segments of Pall’s business, with associated revenues in Cortland more than doubling in the past five years.
“Pall recognized that increasingly stringent environmental requirements, coupled with the growing scarcity of potable water, would create a strong demand for filtration systems capable of providing a reliable, clean water source that could be implemented easily and cost effectively. We responded to this emerging need with a membrane technology that has become the world standard for municipal, industrial and power-generation applications. Shipping our 500th Pall Aria system is an extremely gratifying achievement as well as a testament to the foresight and ingenuity of Pall’s world-class engineering team in Cortland,” said Jeff Seibert, president, Pall Water Processing. Mr. Seibert, a life-long resident of Cortland, oversees this line of business for Pall.
Pall Aria systems are capable of producing drinking water from almost any raw water source. Collectively, the 500 systems produce over 130 million gallons per day of purified water for communities and industry. Using state-of-the-art hollow fiber microfiltration (MF) or ultrafiltration (UF) membranes, the systems transform contaminated water into potable water that is free from harmful bacteria, cysts, and particles. To desalinate sea water, the MF or UF unit can be augmented by a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane system. Requiring minimal manpower for operation and maintenance, Pall systems can boost local water production on a permanent or temporary basis.
Pall is a leader in permanent and mobile membrane technology solutions for municipal and industrial water and emergency relief applications. The Company provides water treatment systems for large and small municipalities and industrial customers around the world. In addition to serving the $13 billion municipal water market, Pall’s filtration technology is increasingly becoming a critical component in intake and process water for food, beverage, chemical, oil, gas, power, and semiconductor production, among others.
“Pall understands the complexities and implications of effective water management. New ways to conserve, reclaim, and utilize untapped water sources are urgently needed. Membrane technologies provide a means to achieve each of these goals,” Mr. Seibert said.
Located in the heart of New York’s Finger Lakes region, Pall Corporation's Cortland facility has been in operation since 1961. The shipment of the 500th system coincides with the celebration of the plant’s 50th anniversary. The site is a major contributor to the Company's total water business currently estimated at $350 million a year. Pall employs over 750 engineers, R&D and materials scientists, quality control, information technology, human resources and manufacturing professionals at the facility. Their role is to develop and produce engineered systems and advanced filtration technologies for some of the most technically demanding markets and applications the Company serves. The facility is a major hub in the Company's global product development, engineering and manufacturing network.
