East Hills, NY (August 15, 2007) - - The growth of the biotechnology industry is driving the need for smaller-scale technologies that deliver full-production performance and versatility. Pall Corporation (NYSE: PLL) answers this need with the introduction of the SupraCap? 100 depth filter capsule, the only intermediate-scale depth filter to be offered in a range of sizes, styles and configurations.
The SupraCap 100 depth filter capsule's versatility and performance simplifies scale-up and speeds processing of 5 L-100 L applications typical of clinical batches, personalized medicines and pilot scale operations. The new disposable depth filter format eliminates the need for cleaning and cleaning validation of traditional stainless steel filter housings, minimizes cross contamination risks and reduces capital costs -- all of which are critical to smaller-scale clarification and prefiltration applications. The capsule design also provides a lower hold-up volume than standard module housings for greater product recovery.
The SupraCap 100 depth filter capsule is completely enclosed. This design eliminates direct operator handling of fragile filter discs. It also protects operators from high potency or biologically toxic compounds in new vaccines and cancer therapeutics.
SupraCap 100 depth filter capsules can be manifolded together or connected upstream of Kleenpak? Nova filters as a fully-integrated disposable system that offers higher performance in a smaller footprint and increased production with minimal re-validation.
The single-use capsule uses two different particle removal mechanisms to achieve high surface- loading and high capacity. This results in cost-effective clarification with extremely clean filtrate quality. Able to remove heavy particulate loads, the SupraCap 100 depth filter capsule can save thousands of dollars per year by protecting downstream filters from damage.
To maximize processing flexibility, the new SupraCap 100 depth filter capsule is available in single- or double-layer media in 10, 20 and 30 inches lengths with either in-line or T-style configurations. The double-layer format is ideal for applications containing higher debris loads and varying particle sizes, common in today's biopharmaceutical applications. The double-layer media also ensures efficient contaminant removal, extends service life and provides greater capacity for maximum throughput.
By fully supporting both the upstream and downstream side of each depth filter sheet with an outside and inside separator plate, the new depth filter capsule design prevents lost product batches caused by high pressure blow outs and ensures that the system will not fail under changing pressure conditions.
"This new intermediate-scale capsule complements Pall's line of SupraCap depth filters and provides a critical scale-up path for process developers," says Scott Anderson, Global Product Manager, Pall Life Sciences. "Providing a critical link between discovery and production processes, the SupraCap 100 depth filter capsule enables process developers to begin testing at the earliest development stage to maximize their investment."
