East Hills, NY (January 12, 2006) - - Pall Corporation (NYSE: PLL) announced today that it has appointed Ebrahim ("Ebbie") Shafizadeh, Ph.D., MT (ASCP), a former postdoctoral fellow in molecular hematology at Harvard Medical School, Brigham & Women's Hospital, as Director of Blood Services for the Western Hemisphere. Dr. Shafizadeh will be responsible for advancing the Company's Life Sciences Scientific and Laboratory Services (SLS), in close association with R&D, product development, regulatory affairs, quality assurance and customer support for its wide range of blood products.
"Dr. Shafizadeh brings a wealth of experience, qualifications and achievements which will allow us to expand the scope of our Life Sciences Blood Laboratory," states Dr. Robert Dickstein, Senior Vice-President, Pall Life Sciences. "His blood banking professional experience, applications knowledge and technical expertise combined with his sophisticated research endeavors will help us build on the scientific prominence and acumen of SLS which is critical to worldwide commercialization of new products and essential to customers."
The newly established position comes at an optimal time as Pall is the global leader in developing innovative technologies to enhance the safety of the blood supply. The Company recently received FDA market clearance for its Acrodose? PL System; a new technology that enables the availability of a safer therapeutic dose of whole blood derived platelets. It also offers the only CE marked medical device to remove prions from red blood cells. Prions are believed to be the causative agent of variant Cruetzfeldt Jakob Disease, the human form of "mad cow disease".
